Gluten & Allergen Free Expo in New Jersey

Gluten Free Jersey Girl was excited to attend the GF expo, which is the premier event for those of us that are gluten free.  I was so excited to actually be able to eat whatever I wanted!  It's hard to be able to do that anywhere after living 2 years gluten free.  We arrived early and luckily were able to attend a question and answer session which was very informative.

We were able to ask any questions we wanted and were provided with useful tips and app's.  My favorite is the Find Me Gluten Free app which you can use anywhere you go.  What I loved about this app was that they continually update it and make sure the app is accurate.  Another useful app is I Can Eat Fast Food Gluten Free and if you travel a lot, Gluten Free Passport will help guide you on your travels gluten free.

The first booth we got to was Rudi's Bakery and they were making grilled cheese sandwiches on their gluten free bread. I was not able to try them because of the cheese, but I have had Rudi's gluten free bread before and they are probably one of the best makers of gluten free sandwich bread out there.  A lot of people around me trying the sandwiches said they were very good!

A product that I knew of already and absolutely love is the Hail Merry Company.  They are a raw food company, gluten free, vegan, dairy free and GMO free!  You cannot get better macaroons anywhere!  Their products are sold in Whole Foods and Deans Natural Food Maret and you may be able to find them in your local health food stores.  You would never know that these are raw or healthy, they are just that good!  I tried their Almond Butter Tart, Lemon Tart and Chocolate Macaroon.  My favorite was the lemon tart, but they are all very tasty!

Vitamix was also there giving a demonstration on their machines and offering a discount if purchasing at the show.  I absolutely love this company and am hoping to get a vitamix one of these days.  He made us a green smoothie, raw soup, orange sorbet and a coffee frappe.  Every one of them tasted unreal.  This machine makes eating a healthy gluten free diet so easy.   I stayed at this display and tried every sample, twice!  That's how good they were!  I just really love that machine...someday!

One of  my favorite moments was meeting Amie, founder of  The Healthy Apple, and I was delighted to find out that Amie was originally a Jersey Girl too.  I first heard of Amie while watching Veria Network's What Would Juliana Do?    It is so inspiring to meet someone who I have followed online and have learned so much from!

Amie was giving out samples from Crunch Master, and be sure to stop by their page for a $ 1.00 off coupon.  The crackers are super crunchy, very tasty and filled with healthy ingredients like sesame, quinoa, amaranth and flax seeds.  You would never know they were healthy.  Try dipping them in hummus or your favorite nut butter.  I have found these crackers in Shoprite, Stop and Shop, A&P, Costco and Walmart.  Be sure to stop by Amie's website for some delicious recipe ideas and stop by Amie's Facebook page.  Let her know we sent you!

I also was excited to meet Carol Kicinski, magazine founder, editor and author of Simply Gluten Free.  Definitely join her facebook page and newsletter list because her website is packed full of useful information and she gives lots of tips, recipe ideas and more.

My favorite new product was New York Superfoods Chia Moxie, Chia Peanut Butter.  This stuff is so good!  I cannot believe I never thought of putting chia and peanut butter together before.  I did ask if it comes in almond butter, but not yet, hopefully soon.  You really only taste the peanut butter, but you are getting so much nutrition by adding the chia seeds.  I met the owners, Catherine & Jason Walsh, and was really impressed by their products. This is a family owned, family run company and it really shows that they care about their products.  They also have another product called Chia Charger, which are these little bites that are totally packed full of superfoods and tons of flavor! These are perfect for after a workout or when you're needing a quick boost of energy.  They are also Raw.

Click Here to learn about their company and see a video about their company.  I bought a jar of Chia Moxie, but am kicking myself for not buying the chia chargers because they tasted fantastic!  There products are non-GMO, super healthy and perfect for an active lifestyle!  Here's their facebook page if you want to connect with them.  Be sure to tell them we sent you!

I have not seen them in stores anywhere by me, but I did see that you can purchase them on Amazon.  Here's the link if you wanted to purchase them.

We received 3 bags filled with samples, magazines, coupons and literature.  Here's a list of some of the vendors we saw at the expo:

nogii Protein Bars
I love these bars.  I first heard about them from Elizabeth on the View.  These bars have a good taste and some of there bars have dairy in them.  Their new Paleo Bar is gluten and dairy free and perfect for a mid-afternoon snack or after a workout.  They gave out tons of samples.

The Cake Over Bakery is located in Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey.  They did have dairy in their products, so I was not able to try them.  I did notice people loving what they were eating though!
If you are in their area, definitely stop by!

thai feast is a gourmet meal that has a few gluten and dairy free options.  I tried the Garlic Black Pepper Chicken and Vegetable Coconut Red Curry.  I loved them both and was excited that they handed me to that I could take home with me!

I absolutely LOVE this bakery!  I tried way too many samples and even took a carrot cake cupcake home.  I will definitely be making a trip to Sweet Megan's Bakery in Pennsylvania one day!  Her bakery is gluten, dairy and soy free.  They will also ship, so be sure to check out her website if you want to try her products.  You will not be disappointed.  Her cupcakes were so moist and the icing was nice and creamy.

I was excited to see another raw food company here.  Raw Revolution bars are 1 of my favorite protein bars.  They are filled with wholesome ingredients, organic, super moist and have tons of flavor.

When I first became gluten free, Pamela's Products were the first products I tried.  I have recently tried their bars, which are very tasty and I've used them as a meal replacement.  They also have pancake mixes, brownie & cookie mixes and more.  It's definitely worth trying her products and she has some really good recipes on her website.  I also emailed them for coupons and they sent me a bunch!

So I have to say that I am overwhelmed by how many samples I received and just how much food I got to sample.  I left feeling totally stuffed!

Gluten Free Finds in Red Bank on Labor Day

Gluten Free Finds in Red Bank on Labor Day

Today we decided to take a ride to Red Bank and walk around to see some of the stores and eat lunch at a vegan café I had heard about called Good Karma Café.  Once we got on the parkway, we could see the traffic was beginning to build and people were definitely leaving the Jersey shore from the long weekend.

I have wanted to go to this café for so long and was excited to try some of their awesome healthy foods.  Their menu features mostly organic, vegan, some gluten free and raw foods.  Unfortunately, they were closed for the Labor Day holiday!  We will definitely try again ...

While walking around we found an awesome place called Yum Café that has smoothies, soups and a salad bar.  I wasn't sure they were open, so we continued walking around.

We stumbled upon an awesome organic pizza place called Earth Pizza and decided to have lunch there.  Not only do they have organic gluten free pizza, but they also offer vegan cheese.  Earth Pizza is a casual style pizzeria with a fresh organic look to it.  The staff was very friendly and it was so nice to see that they knew exactly what gluten and dairy free was.

It can be really difficult to find a place where the food tastes good and is gluten free and dairy free, especially pizza.  I have to say that I really liked this pizza.  It was a nice thin crust and the sauce had a sweet, tangy taste to it.  I ordered the veggie pizza with the vegan cheese and a little extra sauce on the side.   They also had a delicious sweet balsamic vinaigrette that was gluten and dairy free, again, not always easy to find.  Balsamic vinaigrettes can be difficult to order because a lot of restaurants put Parmesan cheese in them.  They also offer several gluten free desserts, as well as a gluten free, dairy free brownie.

I decided not to get the dessert there because across the street was a gluten free bakery, so I figured I would check it out.  The Posh Pop Bakery features gluten free cupcakes, cake pops, brownies, cookies and more.  They also have several dairy free options, but I was disappointed that they did not have any dairy free cake pops left.  They are also located inside a candy shop and so we were a little confused when we first walked in.  I ordered a couple cupcakes and cookies.

I have to say that I loved these cupcakes and cookies.  They taste amazing and I would definitely go back and get them again...

Since we were up that way we decided to stop by Trader Joes and pick up a few things.  Some of their prices compared to my local health food store are so much cheaper, but I just don't get up that way too often.  I definitely need to make more trips up there because the prices are definitely worth it!  I can't wait to start working on some new kale chip recipes...

Managing my way through Disney World
Gluten & Dairy Free

This was my first trip to Disney World since I've been gluten and dairy free.  I was quite nervous about what to do and what I would be able to eat.  I did not want to get sick and ruin my family's first vacation in awhile.  I was very excited to see that there is now a Starbucks in the Magic Kingdom.  Nothing like getting a soy frappaccino and hanging out in the Magic Kingdom with my husband and my son ... I was a happy girl!  I was disappointed that they had no gluten free options in the bakery.  I had read on blogs that they had brownies and things like that in the bakery. I did ask but was told that they did not have any gluten free items. I did find fruit everywhere at the park and found some rice chips around too.  That was nice to see.

We chose a hotel that I had read had gluten free options in the food court, which turned out to be a big help. Art of Animation's Landscape of  Flavors offers an omelet station and a waffle station.   As soon as you tell them you are gluten free they bring the chef over.  They were able to make me gluten free, dairy free waffles and a veggie egg white omelet, all of which were delicious. They have a lot of fresh fruit that you put on top of the waffles.  The waffles were so good!   We also chose this hotel because they had a small 3 room suite with a fridge and microwave, so that I would be able to make things if I needed to.
Below is our quick review of our hotel...

Here's a picture outside 1 of the rooms at the Art of Animation.

My son loved that the kitchen table turned into a bed!

I also brought along a lot of fruit, snacks and gluten free Larabars that I could use in a pinch when I was unable to find anything.  This also turned out to be a great way for me to feel less stressed every time we went to a new park.  We did 7 parks in 6 days, plus Downtown Disney.  I can honestly say, we must have been crazy!  It was way too much and I do not recommend it.  We also chose to eat mostly in the parks, rather than in restaurants.  We ate breakfast in our hotel and then I would pick up some hummus and chips from the hotel vending cart and have that for lunch with some fruit.  The hummus chips which GMO free but the hummus is not, unfortunately, but it was my best option.

That actually worked out great.  For dinner, I ate at the parks and many of the places offer a gluten free bun.  I am not a big meat eater, so I found this difficult for me.  But if you like burgers, chicken burgers and chicken fingers, then you will find that most of the vendors in Disney World, MGM and even Epcot and Universal have gluten free buns, gluten free chicken fingers and even offer a cookie and a brownie.  Since I don't eat food like that often, that did not work that well for me.  Let's just say, I ate a lot of fruit.  At most places when you tell them you are gluten free, they automatically bring out a chef and he will then show you exactly what you can have and show you the ingredients in it.   I loved that because it really made me feel secure that I would not have any problem with the food they prepared.

The best thing I found was Rice Dream ice cream at Plaza Ice Cream Parlor on Main Street.  The peanut butter sauce was also dairy and gluten free and it was such a treat!

My favorite place I found to eat was Pizza Planet in Hollywood Studios.  They made me a gluten free, dairy free pizza with a salad and it was pretty good!  This was the only place that asked me if I was Celiac or gluten intolerant.  I was not sure why they were asking though.  It did take a lot longer, but it was worth it.

We also went to Lego Land and I did not see too many gluten free options.  I did find some grapes and some dried fruit and luckily I had brought my chips and hummus, so it worked out fine.   Here's some snacks I found a LEGOLAND.  There may have been more options, but I did not ask and just ate the snacks that I had
.

LEGOLAND's Miniland is awesome!

Downtown Disney has a Babycakes Vegan Bakery which gluten free.  The Bakery originates from New York City.  They make the best gluten free dairy free donuts!

We also went to Hollywood Studios and I found a burger place that had gluten free rolls.  This was the only burger and fries I had while there and the name of the place was Krusty Burgers.  It was very tasty!

My favorite of all the places we ate at was Chef Mickey.  The chef came to my table and told me everything that was gluten and dairy free in the buffet.  The meats, scrambled eggs and some of the potatoes were gluten and dairy free.  He made me up an egg white veggie omelet and waffles, which were absolutely delicious... I am still dreaming about those waffles!  You would never know they were gluten and dairy free, they were just that good!  I have to figure out how to make them!

Epcot also had a few gluten free options.  I had the Chicken Shawarma Platter from Tangierine Cafe in Morocco at Epcot.  This was one of my favorites.  Lentil salad, hummus, chicken and gluten free roll.

Animal Kingdom was the easiest place to navigate because they have an allergy kiosk.  They give you a list of the places with gluten free items and sell several items such as hummus and veggies, rice chips, Babycakes cookies and brownies.

I had an awesome salad at Flame Tree Barbecue at Animal Kingdom

You will also find Tofutti and Rice Dream ice cream at Animal Kingdom in Dino-Bite Snacks outdoor booth.  I had the chocolate Tofutti which was really good too!

The best suggestion I have is to go right to guest relations as soon as you arrive at each park to see if they can guide you where to go to eat.  I did not do that and I think that would have made it a lot easier for me.  They also do not have signs anywhere telling you they have gluten free options.  You have to ask.  That is just so hard for me because here in New Jersey, a lot of people look at me as if I have 2 heads when I ask if they have a gluten free menu, so I have learned to research before I go anywhere.  This is not always easy to do at Disney and I also found some information I got off some blogs that was not accurate.  Also, bring lots of snacks with you so that you have something to rely on if you are unable to find anything.  If you are going to eat in the parks at the small places, be prepared to eat the same things, burgers, hot dogs and chicken fingers.  Next time, I will definitely try more restaurants so that I have more options.  I was very overwhelmed and had a hard time, but it's definitely manageable if you prepare ahead of time.
Download the gluten free app on your phone because that app got me to a lot of places that I may have passed by.
Contact special diets at Disney and fill out their form with your dietary restrictions several weeks before you arrive ..
Be sure to notify them when making reservations anywhere that you are gluten free.
